Entre 2010 et 2023, Francis Meslet parcourt la Belgique en quête de lieux laissés à l’abandon, témoins de l’histoire et des changements socio-économiques qui l’ont façonné. Lancé pour documenter l’abandon des monuments industriels et urbains, son projet s’élargit rapidement à d’autres lieux en déshérence : usines, friches industrielles, écoles, églises, thermes, piscines, théâtres, manoirs, châteaux, hôpitaux et bien d’autres encore. À travers ses photographies, il immortalise la grandeur et la décadence de l’une des plus anciennes nations d’Europe.
À travers son objectif, Francis Meslet envoie un message fort sur la désindustrialisation, l’abandon des quartiers, la beauté et la fragilité de notre patrimoine, tout en nous invitant à réfléchir sur la manière de le protéger pour les générations futures. Between 2010 and 2023, Francis Meslet travelled around Belgium looking for abandoned places – witnesses to history and the socio-economic changes that haves haped the country. What began as a way of documenting the neglect of industrial and urban monuments, quickly expanded to include other dispossessed places: factories, industrial wastelands, schools, churches, Roman baths, swimming pools, theaters, mansions, castles, and hospitals, for example.
